Find answers to the questions that we are regularly asked:

Is it true that I need to hire an electrician for minor electrical works such as fitting a new plug socket or replacing a light fitting?
Yes! Since 2005 any work requiring the disconnection of part of your electrical system must be undertaken by a qualified electrician. This was brought into UK law (under Part P of the Building Regulations) for safety reasons. Robert Turner is a qualified electrician who can complete both commercial and domestic installations, and sign off on these.
What is 'Part P' of the building regs?
The Building Regulations (set out in the Building Act 1984) are a set of rules that specify the minimum acceptable level of safety for constructed objects in England and Wales.

Part P of the Building Regulations was introduced by the government in 2005 and affects all electrical work carried out in 'dwellings'. People who carry out electrical work in their homes, gardens and outbuildings in England and Wales should follow the regulations set out in Part P to ensure that they are complying with the law. These rules were designed to ensure that electrical work is safe and were introduced in order to reduce the number of deaths, injuries and fires caused by faulty electrical installations.
What is the Elecsa scheme?
Elecsa is one of the five competent person schemes that are currently in operation. You can find out more about Elecsa here (opens in new window).
What is a competent person and do I need one?
A Competent Person is a firm that has been approved by one of the government-approved Part P schemes as sufficiently competent to self-certify that its work complies with the Building Regulations.
A registered firm is not required to notify a building control body of its proposals to carry out electrical installation work before it begins or to have the work inspected on completion.  This reduces costs for the customer as the additional charges for calling out a building control body can be avoided.

All electrical work carried out in kitchens, bathrooms or special locations, and major works that involve adding a new circuit to a dwelling needs to be either designed and carried out by a person who is registered with a Competent Person Self Certification Scheme (such as Elecsa) or be notified to a Building Control Body, tested and certified.

Minor work that is not in a kitchen or special location (e.g. shower, sauna, electric floor heating) such as replacing electrical fittings (e.g. sockets, outlets and ceiling roses), replacing cable on a single circuit where it has been damaged by fire, rodent or impact, and adding lighting points or sockets to existing circuits does not need to be notified to a Building Control Body (but should still be undertaken by a qualified electrician).
